This initiative, funded by the DWP in collaboration with the Department of Health & Social Care, is part of the government’s ‘Keep Britain Working’ strategy, which aims to improve workplace health, wellbeing, and productivity.

The operational imperative for workplace wellbeing

The need for robust occupational health strategies is supported by compelling data. Research suggests that sickness absence costs employers an average of £120 in lost profit every single day. What's more concerning, however, is that 10% of workers who have taken time off for mental health didn’t feel comfortable disclosing mental health as the reason for this. Additionally, over a quarter (26%) of workers who have never taken time off for their mental health say they have needed to, but have felt unable to do so due to workload, fear of judgement, or financial concerns.

This programme addresses these challenges by equipping managers with the confidence and practical tools to manage occupational health risks and foster a positive, supportive workplace culture.

Roger Mason, Director of Consulting at Reed Learning, explains: "Supporting SMEs to improve health and wellbeing is critical for building resilient, productive teams. By offering flexible delivery options and fully funded access, we aim to remove barriers to learning and empower managers with the practical skills they need to create healthier workplaces across England."

What’s on offer?

The offer runs until 31 March 2026 and is available in three flexible formats to suit the needs of busy SMEs:

  • eLearning: Self-paced online learning.

  • Virtual classroom: Live, instructor-led sessions supported by eLearning.

  • Face to face: One-day classroom-based training at 12 Reed venues across England.

The curriculum covers essential topics such as health risk management, understanding fitness for work, and responding to workers’ health needs. Upon completion, participants will earn the IOSH Managing Occupational Health and Wellbeing certificate.

Who can apply?

This fully funded training is open to SMEs that meet the following criteria:

  • Based in England with two to 249 employees.

  • Line managers responsible for at least one employee.

  • Managers who have not completed the IOSH Managing Occupational Health and Wellbeing certificate in the last three years.

Why now?

This is a unique opportunity for SMEs to invest in their managers, improve workplace wellbeing, and boost productivity - all at no cost.

David Sharp, CEO of International Workplace, said: "As the founder of a small business, I understand the challenges SMEs face. This programme is designed to deliver practical, high-impact learning that makes a real difference to businesses and their people."

Don’t miss out on this chance to strengthen your team and create a healthier, more resilient workplace.
