Materials Science Laboratory Technician

Rolling Fixed Term Contract

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Materials Science Laboratory Technician to join an innovative technology company developing sustainable manufacturing processes. Based on-site in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, this contracted position offers the potential to become permanent and provides the opportunity to contribute to the scale-up of novel carbon conversion technologies. Working within a multidisciplinary Process Development team, you will play a key role in laboratory operations, process experimentation, and the development of future commercial manufacturing processes.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring safe and efficient working practices.
  • Maintain laboratory facilities, equipment, consumables, and safety systems.
  • Prepare, operate, monitor, and clean chemical reactor and process equipment.
  • Support the planning and delivery of experimental programmes alongside engineers and scientists.
  • Collect, analyse, and communicate experimental data to support process development.
  • Assist with the installation, commissioning, and modification of laboratory and pilot-scale equipment.
  • Operate analytical equipment and techniques, including gas chromatography, colourimetry, and other process measurements.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and process issues, implementing improvements where required.
  • Maintain laboratory documentation, including SOPs, risk assessments, and COSHH records.

 

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in laboratory or pilot-scale chemical process operations.
  • Experience developing and following SOPs within a chemical processing environment.
  • Experience with laboratory automation and control systems.
  • Chemistry related degree
  • Experience in process development, advanced materials manufacturing, or scale-up activities.
