Senior Litigation Officer - Legal Services 

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Litigation Officer to join a Legal Services team at Local Authority Council.

In this key role, you’ll manage a varied and often complex litigation caseload, providing high-quality legal advice and representation to support the Council’s services and protect its interests.

You’ll work closely with the Principal Litigation Lawyer and play a vital role in delivering an effective, responsive legal service across multiple areas including housing, planning and environmental health.

What you’ll be doing

  • Managing a varied caseload of civil and criminal litigation matters, including complex cases
  • Representing the Council in courts (Magistrates’, County, High Court and beyond)
  • Providing expert legal advice to Members, officers and stakeholders
  • Drafting legal documents, notices, reports and court documentation
  • Supporting key service areas including:
    • Housing
    • Planning
    • Licensing
    • Environmental Health
    • Hackney Carriage
  • Advising and attending committees, panels and hearings
  • Instructing and liaising with Counsel and external professionals
  • Supporting and developing junior team members, including trainees
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of the Litigation Team

Essential

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive (with rights of audience in England & Wales)
  • Strong experience in litigation, ideally within housing and/or planning law
  • Knowledge of court procedures across Magistrates’, County and High Courts
  • Excellent legal drafting, analytical and research skills
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex legislation
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines
  • Confident communicator with the ability to engage with a range of stakeholders
