Server Obsolescence Remediation Engineer

Join our UK ITS Infrastructure team at a leading financial institution, where we focus on providing core IT services. As a Server Obsolescence Remediation Engineer, you will play a crucial role in assessing and resolving obsolete software components across Windows and Linux servers, ensuring minimal disruption to our business operations.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong expertise in Windows Server (2008–2025) and major Linux distributions (RHEL, CentOS).
  • Experience with patching tools (e.g., WSUS, SCCM, RHSatellite) and automation (e.g., Ansible, PowerShell).
  • Solid understanding of change control, server hardening, and infrastructure dependencies.
  • Proven track record in system upgrades, vulnerability remediation, or server migrations.
  • Familiarity with configuration management and CMDB platforms.

Desirable:

  • Exposure to virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V) and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure).
  • ITIL Foundation or similar certification.
  • Awareness of security compliance standards (e.g., CIS benchmarks, ISO 27001).

Day-to-Day of the Role:

  • Review risk scoring reports and prioritise remediation actions based on criticality.
  • Remediate obsolete operating systems (e.g., Windows Server 2012 & 2016, RHEL 7), middleware, and third-party components.
  • Plan and execute upgrades, in-place patches, or re-platforming of legacy environments.
  • Coordinate with application owners to manage maintenance windows and validate post-remediation stability.
  • Conduct pre-change checks, create back-out plans, and update relevant CMDB entries.
  • Collaborate with Security, Infrastructure, and Change Management teams to meet compliance and operational standards.
  • Maintain detailed remediation logs via Confluence and update the central obsolescence dashboard.
  • Participate in knowledge transfer and documentation of remediation playbooks or scripts.
