Wigan Council are looking for two dedicated Seasonal Gardeners to join our team for the next 3-4 months. This role is ideal for individuals who can work independently with minimal supervision and have a passion for maintaining public spaces to high standards.
Day-to-day of the role:
Work autonomously to maintain parks, gardens, and other public spaces within the borough.
Maintain operational records and documentation, submitting them promptly to the Team Leader.
Take responsibility for the security of vehicles, machinery, and materials allocated to you.
Operate a range of grass cutting equipment and powered hand tools effectively.
Undertake a variety of grounds and general horticultural maintenance tasks including sports pitch marking, maintenance of flower beds, shrub beds, and herbaceous borders, as well as pruning and hedge cutting.
Support and adhere to policies, procedures, and relevant legislation, particularly regarding health and safety, to ensure quality standards are met.
Address day-to-day problems, enquiries, and complaints, providing solutions where possible.
Act as an 'eyes and ears' service across the borough by reporting any observed issues such as blocked gullies, fly tipping, or anti-social behaviour through the appropriate channels.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Proven experience in operational grounds maintenance/parks organisation or a similar environment.
A qualification in amenity horticulture, greenkeeping, groundsman, or arboriculture, such as City and Guilds 3, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent.
Herbicide Application qualifications – PA1, PA2 & PA6AW, or adequate knowledge and experience.
Relevant Health & Safety knowledge and experience.
Flexibility to work in line with service demands, including evenings and weekends.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact positively with colleagues and the public.
Proficiency in operating a full range of grass cutting equipment and powered hand tools, including ride-on mowers.
