Overview

We are working on behalf of a construction business seeking an experienced Purchase Ledger Clerk to join their finance team. This role plays a key part in managing subcontractor payments, ensuring compliance with CIS regulations, and maintaining accurate financial records.

Key Responsibilities

CIS Payment Processing

  • Calculate subcontractor payments using timesheets, including labour and materials splits
  • Apply appropriate CIS tax deductions (0%, 20%, or 30%)
  • Prepare and process weekly subcontractor payment runs
  • Generate remittance advice and deduction statements

Subcontractor Verification

  • Verify subcontractors with HMRC prior to first payment
  • Maintain accurate subcontractor records (UTR, NI number, company details)
  • Ensure correct CIS status is applied

Compliance & Reporting

  • Submit monthly CIS returns to HMRC
  • Ensure full compliance with CIS regulations and deadlines
  • Manage corrections, amendments, and late submissions where required

Record Keeping

  • Reconcile labour costs and CIS accounts
  • Maintain detailed payment records and audit trails
  • Assist with year-end processes and audits
  • Produce weekly reports for senior management
  • Ensure accurate and organised document filing

Queries & Communication

  • Respond to subcontractor queries regarding payments and deductions
  • Liaise with internal departments including accounts and site teams
  • Communicate with HMRC when necessary

Skills & Experience Required

  • Previous experience in CIS or construction accounting
  • Strong understanding of UK CIS regulations and tax deductions
  • Experience with accounting or payroll systems (e.g. Sage, Xero )
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong Excel / Google Sheets and data entry skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management abilities

Desirable

  • AAT qualification or similar finance-related degree
