Reed Insurance London are working with a central London based client seeking an SME Underwriter for their Retail Team, responsible for underwriting SME business through the broker channel. This role demands delivering consistent, high-quality service to clients while achieving profitable results. The successful candidate will ensure all underwriting activities align with regulatory requirements and the company’s underwriting guidelines.
Day-to-day of the role:
Assess and underwrite a range of risks including SME packages, Property Owners, Home, and Office risks.
Review and analyse risk submissions, liaising with brokers to obtain all necessary information for accurate risk assessment.
Provide pricing recommendations and set appropriate terms in line with underwriting guidelines and business strategy.
Process quotations, policies, renewals, and mid-term adjustments (MTAs) in accordance with contract certainty requirements.
Collaborate with brokers and internal teams to deliver tailored insurance solutions that meet client needs.
Build, develop, and maintain strong relationships with a designated panel of brokers to support growth and achieve business targets.
Support and mentor junior team members, acting as a referral point for underwriters with lower authority levels.
Produce regular analysis, reports, and management information on own accounts for internal and external stakeholders.
Contribute to product development initiatives and risk management strategies.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Cert CII (or equivalent professional qualification).
Minimum of 2 years’ underwriting experience across SME, retail, catering, and property owner risks.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with proven experience managing broker relationships.
Ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally.
Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to influence and build rapport.
Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and service standards.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Good knowledge of the UK general insurance market, including regulatory frameworks and legislation.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and collaboration tools such as Teams.
