Financial Accountant

We are seeking a Principal Accountant to oversee the Dedicated Schools Grant and maintained schools within a large public sector organisation. This role involves assisting Group Finance Managers in developing the organisation’s Medium Term Financial Strategy, ensuring proper financial administration, and coordinating the production of revenue and capital estimates and Final Accounts.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Assist Group Finance Managers in developing forward-looking financial strategies, considering future government funding, income, and cost pressures.
  • Coordinate with the Group Finance Manager and liaise with Financial Management and operational managers on the production of both revenue and capital estimates and Final Accounts.
  • Ensure auditable systems and procedures are in place to demonstrate adherence to policies.
  • Provide regular financial information for analysis, forecasting, and strategic planning to support operational management.
  • Offer professional financial advice on service issues, including policy developments or changes in service delivery.
  • Attend meetings and working groups as required.
  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of grant claims and provision of information to other agencies including Central Government, CIPFA, DfE, etc.
  • Deputise in the absence of the Group Finance Manager at various management meetings and budget clinics.
  • Oversee the Dedicated Schools Grant, ensuring robust and timely reporting to relevant governing bodies and the Department for Education.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Detailed knowledge of current management accounting and financial accounting principles.
  • Understanding of the finance and legislative framework of public finance.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • At least 5 years of experience at a senior level in financial management.
  • Proven experience in managing staff.
