Head of Nursing & Advanced Practice

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and credible clinical leader to take on the role of Head of Nursing & Advanced Practice within a high-performing urgent care organisation.
This senior leadership role is ideal for someone passionate about quality, patient safety, workforce development, and service innovation, with a strong background in advanced clinical practice and healthcare governance.
The Role
Reporting to the Medical Director and sitting at Board level, you will provide strategic and operational leadership, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care, patient safety, and service delivery.
You will act as the bridge between frontline clinical practice and organisational strategy, driving improvements across nursing, allied health professionals (AHPs), and care staff.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Governance & Quality
Lead quality governance frameworks, ensuring patient safety and continuous improvement
Ensure compliance with national regulatory standards (e.g. CQC, NMC, NICE, NHSE)
Oversee audits, incident management, and quality assurance processes
Lead safeguarding, infection control, and patient safety initiatives
Drive measurable improvements in patient outcomes and experience
Workforce Leadership
Provide professional leadership to nursing, AHPs, and care staff
Lead workforce strategy including recruitment, retention, training, and development
Oversee appraisal, revalidation, and clinical supervision processes
Promote a collaborative, high-performance, multidisciplinary culture
Clinical Leadership & Service Delivery
Ensure effective management and delivery of clinical services
Support strategic planning alongside the Medical Director
Maintain a visible clinical presence and professional credibility
Advise the Board on clinical impact of policy and service changes
Service Development & Improvement
Lead service redesign and innovation initiatives
Develop evidence-based care pathways and guidelines
Champion patient-centred care and continuous improvement
Strategic Leadership
Contribute to organisational strategy and system-wide healthcare planning
Build partnerships across the wider healthcare system
Support financial sustainability and operational effectiveness
Participate in on-call rota
Person Specification
Essential Experience
Senior-level nursing leadership experience with a proven track record
Experience leading change management and service improvement
Strong background in clinical governance, quality assurance, and auditing
Experience managing conflict and driving high performance
Qualifications
Master’s degree (or equivalent)
Advanced Clinical Practice experience
Recognised leadership/management qualification
Evidence of ongoing professional development
