Deputy Payroll Operations Director (Interim 3-6 months - Fully remote)

We are seeking a Deputy Payroll Operations Director to join our Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This role is crucial in supporting the Payroll Directors and colleagues across all aspects of payroll operations, including service development and bid work. The successful candidate will ensure high-standard service delivery, meeting both regulatory and organisational needs, and maintaining compliance with HMRC and employment legislation.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Hold senior level accountability for the management of the payroll service, including setting priorities, staff development, and performance reviews.
- Ensure the payroll services are customer-focused and responsive to customer needs.
- Analyse and provide details in support of performance indicators and targets as required.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance payroll processes to ensure efficiency and compliance.
- Act as a senior level point of escalation for investigating payroll discrepancies and staffing matters.
- Build strong relationships with clients, providing specialist advice on payroll-related matters.
- Interpret and implement updates to pay, including pay awards, circulars, and statutory and legislative changes.
- Support and develop policies and procedures to improve the efficiency of the payroll service.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a senior payroll leader.
- Excellent IT skills, particularly in MS Word and Excel; familiarity with VLOOKUP and pivot tables is advantageous.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Effective communication and numerical skills.
- Ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet deadlines.
- Willingness to undertake continuous personal and professional development.
- Knowledge of Local Government and Teachers Pension schemes is desirable.
- Experience working in local government authorities, including schools.
- CIPP qualification or equivalent level of experience preferred.
- Minimum education: GCSE level or equivalent with grades A-C in at least 5 subjects including English and Maths.
